DIRECTOR: NUCLEAR SAFETY, LIABILITIES AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Salary: R948 174 per annum, inclusive package (Level 13) (Ref. 141480/3) • Head Office
Requirements:
Degree in Natural Sciences (major in Chemistry/Physics) and 5 years’ Middle Management/Senior Management experience in the nuclear industry especially related to safety, emergency and liability management PLUS the following key competencies: Knowledge of: • Nuclear policy and legislation • Nuclear energy in general and nuclear/radiation safety in particular • Government processes • Departmental procedures and protocol. Thinking demand: • Creative/innovative thinker • Logical and objective • Accurate • Diplomatic. Skills: • Computer literacy • Communication at management level • Ability to organise and control meetings, workshops etc • Ability to do administrative tasks • Good writing • Interpersonal. Duties: • Manage the activities of the Directorate: * Develop and maintain a statutory framework for nuclear safety, liabilities and emergency management * Administer South Africa’s obligations in terms of the National Nuclear Regulator Act * Administer nuclear safety, liabilities and disaster management matters related to the International Atomic Energy Agency and international obligations • Provide strategic leadership pertaining to nuclear safety, liabilities and emergency management • Provide advice on the implementation and interpretation of the legislative framework pertaining to nuclear safety, liabilities and emergency management • Participate in and give inputs to conventions/agreements pertaining to nuclear safety, liabilities and emergency management • Manage the Directorate: * Develop the operational plan for the Directorate and ensure its implementation * Allocate and manage resources at functional levels to ensure the delivery on set targets for the Directorate * Formulate and identify policy shortfalls and necessary amendments * Conduct financial planning and account for allocated budget * Ensure adherence to policy and statutory directives relevant to the functional terrain of the Directorate * Monitor, evaluate and report on the performance of the Directorate.

Note: All short-listed candidates will be subjected to a technical exercise that intends to test relevant technical elements of the job; some of the interviewed candidates will be subjected to a 2-day competency assessment that will test generic managerial competencies.
