Job Description

Directorate: Forestry Regulations and Oversight 
Assistant Director: Veld Fires 
Salary: R417 552 per annum (all-inclusive) (Ref. 212 /2016)
Requirements: • Bachelor’s  degree  in  Forestry,  Natural  Resources  Management,  Environmental  Management  or 
Disaster  Management  (you  are  required  to  furnish  a  credit  certificate  and/or  statement  of  results)  with  appropriate 
experience in integrated veld fire management environment • Experience in working with Fire Protection Associations 
(FPAs) and coordinating, fostering partnerships and setting up operational strategies inside and outside Government 
to achieve integrated fire management including strengthening FPAs • Working knowledge of the National Veld and 
Forest Fire Act, 1998 (Act No 101 of 1998) and disaster management policy and legislation • Skills in integrated fire 
management,  stakeholder  management,  promotional  campaigns  and  policy  development  •  Computer  literacy 
• Knowledge of and experience in financial management, strategic capability, leadership competence, expertise in the 
field of veld fire risk reduction and the development of guidelines and programmes for veld fire risk in line with other 
relevant legislation in the country • Valid driver’s licence. 
Duties:• Assist the Director: Forest Regulation and Oversight in the administration of the National Veld and Forest Fire 
Act  (NVFFA)  • Assist  in  the  administration  of  National  Veld  and  Forest  Fire  Act,  1998  (Act  101  of  1998)  (NVFFA) 
• Develop  policies,  strategies  and  enforcement  frameworks  and  guidelines  to  ensure  effective  implementation  and 
administration of the NVFFA • Manage the process of establishing relationships and maintaining the collaboration and 
cooperation with Forestry Regions, FPAs and other institutions involved in integrated veld fire management • Manage 
and monitor the registration and administration of FPAs • Provide annual reports on the state and administration of the 
NVFFA • Provide assessments of the effectiveness and efficiency of FPAs with corrective action plans where necessary 
• Advise and assist FPAs on operational improvements • Develop business process analysis for FPA registration and 
administration • Assist FPAs in compiling business plans to ascertain whether candidates meet criteria • Recommend 
to the Minister on the registration and deregistration of FPAs • Review FPA prioritisation processes • Appraise Fire 
Protection Officers • Assess applications for firebreak exemption • Ensure that FPAs have compiled and submitted 
annual and progress reports • Render training on the legislation to regional fire advisers and landowners.
